A group carries canoes to the water. The boats bob to and fro, and soon the first paddle strokes move them along. Words are exchanged, cameras and recording devices passed from hand to hand. Would you like to be filmed? Can I ask you a few questions? Conversations are recorded, fleeting moments caught on film, a few meals shared together. Which stories can be told about which rivers, and which ones cannot be put into words?

Reclaim Your Space

Refugees are often the object of societal inquiry and discussion. Reclaim Your Space aims to reverse that subject-object relationship. In this project the participants lay German society on the examination table, posing questions and expecting answers.

Dialog am Ort

Was soll ich denn erzählen? Irgendwas. Was du möchtest.

What should I talk about? Anything. Whatever you want. In Dialog am Ort (Dialogue on Site), people new to Berlin discuss places and experiences of particular personal significance. The films vary as much as the narrators themselves, but they all touch on relationships between “here” and “there,” between navigating memories and building something new.

Über das Projekt About the Project

Ferngespräche (Distant Conversations) is an exhibition project in which new Berlin residents share their personal perspectives on the city. Over the course of three workshop series, the participants collaborated with film and performance artists to create twelve video collages about memory, protest, access, doubt, and the process of arrival. The films are part of the permanent exhibit Ortsgespräche at the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum.
